Wooden Boat Transom

Transom. by charles miller (jackson, mich.) just was given a beautiful wooden boat. its 16 feet long, 8 feet wide. it's in realy beautiful shape, except the transom was all rotted out. ineed to know what kind of wood to use to replace it.. Have a look at how the transom is being reinforced. i am using light wood half checked glued with thickened epoxy. this is step 3 of a series of movies illustrating the stitch and glue boat. An aluminum jon boat with a wood transom that needs replacement means possibilities, such as making the transom taller to accommodate a long-shaft outboard. whatever your choices, the end result needs to fit well, be properly finished and securely attached to the aluminum hull..

Wood preservation, rot repair, and restoration using epoxy

Finally back to building the boat and i definitely see the point in making sure the end grain of the transom isn't exposed. i am not planning on using epoxy on the design, but following the original plans. i still am not sure what wood would be best for the transom frame.. Where the wood is basically "wedged" in place and then clamped, screwed, glued, etc i was afraid even a slight difference from the intended 1.5" transom wood thickness would result in flexing and breaking of the outer fiberglass skin.. Typical small boats have transoms made of wood, as the years pass the wood will rot and become useless. this instructable will guide you in removing, fabricating and replacing the transom of that old boat you just bough againt your wife's wishes..
